Year 7 Belong Day: A Celebration of Faith, Friendship, and Fun
On February 26, all of Year 7 gathered at the Light of Christ Centre in Waitara for an inspiring and energetic Belong Day, joining over 700 students from across the Diocese. The day was an opportunity for students to grow in their faith, build friendships, and reflect on the theme of Goodness, Truth, and Beauty, following the CSYMI “Catch the Wave” program. Leading the event was Mr. Dumas’ Year 10 CSYMA Youth Ministry class, who had undergone special training in small group dynamics and leadership to help facilitate discussions and activities throughout the day.
The Mercy College Rock Band kicked off the event with an electrifying performance that set the tone for an exciting day ahead. With powerful vocals from Erica, a Year 12 student, the band inspired the crowd to sing, dance, and engage fully in the experience. The energy in the room skyrocketed when teachers took to the stage for a dance-off, proving that Mercy College staff—led by Mrs. Millard and Mr. Dumas—have the best dance moves in the Diocese! Laughter and cheers filled the room as they wowed the crowd with their swift footwork and even some impressive breakdancing.
A highlight of the day was a talk by Fr. Sam French, who shared his personal journey of faith through a series of clever and engaging video clips. His message resonated deeply, encouraging students to reflect on how God shapes our identity and purpose. Following this, Year 10 students led thought-provoking discussions on the idea of true beauty and how modern culture can often leave us feeling disconnected from our true worth. The conversations challenged students to see beyond superficial standards and recognize the beauty in themselves and others.
The spacious grass ovals surrounding the Light of Christ Centre provided the perfect setting for recess and lunch, allowing students to run, play, and enjoy time with friends. The day concluded with prayer, worship, and a commissioning led by Mrs. Millard, who prayed over the students, sending them forth to be a light in their communities. A huge thank you to Mr. Dumas for organising the day, as well as the Year 7 Religion teachers for their support and guidance. Belong Day 2024 was a truly memorable experience, leaving students with a sense of faith, friendship, and purpose as they continue their journey at Mercy College.
