Co-curricular Activities

Debating & Public Speaking

Debating and Public Speaking at Mercy Catholic College are important co-curricular activities which provide unique opportunities for students in terms of academic, emotional and social growth.

Both speaking experiences develop skills in reasoning and persuasion.  Debaters and public speakers develop the ability to think critically and articulate their views about philosophical, ethical and moral issues and current affairs. Debating also boosts teamwork, listening and research skills.

The Mercy College Inter-House Debating competition is a fun opportunity for students in Years 7 and 8. It encourages broad participation and extends the friendly, competitive spirit between Houses. This competition is held in Terms 3 and 4.

Selected teams participate in the Catholic Schools Debating Association (CSDA) debating competition in Terms 1 and 2, and the Macquarie Cup Debating Championship held through the year.

In Public Speaking, students regularly participate in the Catholic Schools Debating Association competition in Term 1, and have the opportunity to enter other competitions.
